Coverage Affordability Check
Estimate whether your household qualifies for ACA marketplace premium subsidies, Medicaid, or CHIP based on your state's Medicaid expansion decision and 2024 federal poverty guidelines. Educational only — confirm eligibility on HealthCare.gov or your state marketplace. The poverty guidelines are published each year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Medicaid expansion, for example, covers adults up to 138% of the poverty line in participating states. See our methodology for the exact thresholds and how this estimate is calculated.
How this estimate works
The check applies the 2024 federal poverty level (FPL) formula — base of $15,060 for a one-person household plus $5,380 for each additional person — to compute your household's percentage of FPL. ACA Marketplace subsidies (premium tax credits) are available between 100% and 400% of FPL (and beyond through the American Rescue Plan extensions through 2025), with cost-sharing reductions added between 100% and 250% FPL on Silver-tier plans.
In Medicaid expansion states, adults under 138% FPL typically qualify for Medicaid. In the 10 non-expansion states (AL, FL, GA, KS, MS, SC, TN, TX, WI, WY), adults without dependent children below 100% FPL fall into the "coverage gap" — too poor to qualify for marketplace subsidies but ineligible for Medicaid in their state. Children may still qualify for CHIP at higher income thresholds (typically 200-300% FPL).
