HRSA shortage designation data
This August 2026 reference documents 48,151 HPSA records and 4,155 MUA records in PlainHealthAccess’s current HRSA export. It gives researchers, reporters, and builders a stable source, field, vintage, and limitation record before they reuse the exports.

The links go to HRSA. Our CSV and JSON above are the same designations normalized into one row shape, which is the only thing we add to them.
What the files contain
- HPSA records: HRSA designation ID, shortage category, score, county and state identifiers, population served, provider need, and status where supplied.
- MUA records: designation ID, county and state identifiers, Index of Medical Underservice, designation type, and designation date where supplied.
- Processing: PlainHealthAccess normalizes the two source collections for download; it does not invent a clinical, provider, or appointment-availability field.
Use and limitation
HRSA lists no usage limitations for the Health Professional Shortage Area dataset. This processed export is offered under CC BY 4.0; credit PlainHealthAccess and the HRSA Data Warehouse when reusing it.
A designation is a federal structural shortage classification. It does not show real-time appointments, insurance acceptance, clinical quality, or whether a particular person can receive care. Confirm current eligibility or care options with the official HRSA tools and a qualified provider.

Publishers can embed a compact, source-linked HPSA and MUA overview. The widget is noindex, uses the current portal vintage, and states the same care-availability limitation as this data contract.
